NatWest Schools Cup 2015-16: Sedbergh advance to semi-finals of under-15 national competiton for first time

Sedbergh School came back from a five-point deficit just after half time with four unanswered tries to defeat Whitgift School 34-17 in their NatWest Schools Cup under-15 quarter-final, away from home. The result means they advance to the last four of the prestigious competition for the first time.

Leading 12-10 at half-time, Sedbergh – the alma mater of former England captain Will Carling – were soon under pressure as Whitgift scored a try through prop Aristot Benz-Salomon, which was converted by Oscar Bailey.

Yet Sedbergh were unstoppable thereafter, scoring through a brace of second-half tries from full-back James Magee, as well as wings Harry Hollins and Will Panday, in a thrilling performance.

Sedbergh will meet Millfield, the 2009 winners and runners-up in 2003 and 2008, at Allianz Park on Mar 6. The consolation for Whitgift is that their under-18 side are through to the semi-finals which will be played on Feb 27, also at the home of the Saracens Premiership club.

Also in the under-15’s cup, Millfield defeated Woodhouse Grove 19-6 in the last eight, to ensure one of the strongest semi-final line-ups ever seen in the competition, with four of the powerhouses of schoolboy rugby set to clash in Barnet, North London.

In the second semi-final, 2013 and 2014 winners Warwick, who lost in last year's Twickenham final to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, meet Wellington College, two-time victors themselves.

Wellington defeated Dulwich College 20-3 away from home to seal their passage into the last four, while Warwick squeezed through on the away rule, after drawing 12-12 at Bromsgrove, whose under-18 team defend the title this year and have reached the semi-finals under head of rugby Tony Windo, the former Gloucester and Worcester Warriors prop forward.

The reigning champions face Whitgift in a mouth-watering tie. But it is Sedbergh who have proved the revelation of the knockout competition this season, having entered the NatWest Cup for the first time in many years. All semi finals from Allianz Park will be streamed live by the RFU.

U15 NatWest Schools Cup quarter-final results:
Millfield 19-6 Woodhouse Grove

Whitgift 17-34 Sedbergh
Bromsgrove 12-12 Warwick (Warwick through as away side)
