TWO student brothers returning to their home in New Zealand became separated when in transit at Auckland Airport after flying in from Hong Kong.
Chen Yu (Roger) Ting, 17, and his brother Andrew were returning to study at New Plymouth Boys’ High School on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island.
After spending 24 hours flying, Roger mistakenly went to Gate 46, instead of Gate 47, and boarded a plane that flew to the city of Tauranga, which is 310km away from New Plymouth.
“I went to Tauranga. I didn’t have any clue what to do when I got there and I didn’t know where my brother was,” Roger told NZ Stuff.
His brother realising his brother was missing got off the plane destined for New Plymoputh and went looking for him at Auckland Airport.
“I didn’t know where he was,” Andrew said.
“He was missing and I was shocked when I heard he was in Tauranga.”
Taipei-born Roger and his guardian, Patricia Rowe, did not know how he was allowed to gain access to the wrong flight, but Roger added that the Air New Zealand staff were extremely friendly when told of his plight.
“After I went to the wrong place, they helped me a lot. They paid for me to stay there, and for the ticket back to Auckland and from Auckland back to New Plymouth as well,” Ting said.
However his brother was not, at first, so fortunate,.
“Air New Zealand told me I had to pay for my own new ticket to New Plymouth because I hopped off the plane by myself.
“But then, eventually, they paid for me.”
Ms Rowe said the boys’ family was distraught when they heard Roger had gone missing and upset to hear Andrew had been left alone at the airport.
“They were so relieved when Roger turned up in Tauranga,” she said.
“And when Andrew was safe. They are two lovely young men and Andrew wanted to make sure his brother was OK.
On Monday a spokeswoman for Air New Zealand told NZ Stuff that it was unlikely anyone would be available to respond to questions about the incident until Tuesday.
