US Accused Of Plotting Cyberattack On Iran

The US devised an elaborate plan for a cyberattack on Iran in case talks to curb its nuclear programme failed and military conflict broke out, a new documentary has claimed.

The 'Zero Days' film says thousands of American military and intelligence personnel were involved in a project - code-named Nitro Zeus - devised to disable Iran's air defences, power grid and communications systems.

The Natanz uranium enrichment facility in Iran.

It was developed during the early years of President Obama's administration, but has been shelved after the nuclear deal was struck between Iran and six other nations last summer.

Apparently tens of millions of dollars were spent placing electronic implants in Iranian computer networks.

Sky's Tom Parmenter explains the framework of the historic nuclear deal.

One of the key goals of the planned cyberattack was to disable the Fordo nuclear enrichment site, considered one of the hardest targets in Iran because it is built deep into a mountain near the city of Qum.

The operation would have inserted a computer worm into Fordo's systems, disabling the facility's centrifuges used to enrich uranium.

Nitro Zeus would have been a sequel to Olympic Games, the codename given to a 2010 cyberattack blamed on the US and Israel that used a sophisticated worm called Stuxnet to destroy 1,000 centrifuges at Iran's Natanz nuclear facility.

President Obama says the Iran nuclear deal has allowed a unique opportunity to resolve differences.

Stuxnet was reportedly delivered to the facility on a thumb drive by an Iranian double agent working for Israel.

Zero Days is due to be first shown on Wednesday at the Berlin Film Festival.

It is directed by Alex Gibney who also directed We Steal Secrets: The Story Of Wikileaks.
