A THREE-STOREY international terminal and four new aerobridges will be built at Gold Coast airport to prepare for a massive influx of international visitors for the Commonwealth Games.
Work is soon to start on the $300 million upgrade, which will ready the Coolangatta airport for an expected 126,000 athletes, delegates and spectators expected to arrive for the games in 2018.
The first stage will see more space dedicated to three new widebodied aircraft and a new three-level terminal building at the airport’s southern end, which would accommodate two aerobridges.
Subsequent stages of the project will start in late 2018 and 2020, and include the revamp of the existing terminal, places for two more widebodied aircraft and extra aerobridges if needed.
A focus of the revamped design has been to create extra space for wide-bodied aircraft.
Gold Coast Tourism chief executive Martin Winter told the ABC the airport had to make a good impression to international guests.
“It’s absolutely critical that the arrival experience and departure experience is as smooth as possible so both Brisbane and Gold Coast airports are critical to that,” he said.
Gold Coast Airport chief operating officer Marion Charlton said a number of agencies would be working together to keep everyone safe.
“We’ll have federal police, customs, immigration, quarantine and ourselves,” she said.
“So it’s not any one company delivering this, it has to be team work.”
The first stage of the upgrade is expected to create about 230 fulltime jobs with about 180 new workers required for ongoing operations.
Gold Coast Airport is the sixth largest airport in the country, with more than 5.8 million passengers passing through each year.
