A CRUISE ship that was previously battered by a major storm in the Atlantic Ocean has returned to port early, cutting short another cruise.

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas docked in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Wednesday morning. The ship was scheduled to return from a southern Caribbean cruise on Friday.

However, cruise line spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez says planned stops in Barbados and St Kitts were skipped so the 347-metre ship could avoid predicted strong winds and rough seas.

The company says the captain was following a new storm avoidance policy that was instituted after the ship was damaged last month when more than 4000 passengers hunkered down for hours because of nine-metre waves and hurricane force winds.

Footage and pictures of the carnage were posted by holiday-makers on board MS Anthem of the Seas as it passed through the storm.

Videos showed towering waves outside cabin windows after passengers were told to stay in their rooms as the Caribbean cruiser rocked from side to side.

Four sustained minor injuries. Martinez also says a small number of the ship’s passengers and crew have been treated for what’s believed to be norovirus.

Passenger Jacob Ibrag took to Twitter during the storm to tell of the terror on board the luxury liner.

“Hungry, tired and seeking prayer from all of you tonight. The #anthemoftheseas has been rocking with no end in sight,” he wrote.

“Don’t think I’ve ever missed land this much. In other news, wish I took those swimming lessons ...

“Mother nature decided to take us all for a ride. Just wonder if this storm system could’ve been avoided.”

The ship left Cape Liberty in New Jersey, US, on Saturday for a seven-day cruise.

It was en route to Port Canaveral, near Orlando, Florida, when radar images appeared to show it passing through a hurricane-force storm off the coast of South Carolina.

The ship, which launched last April and can hold more than 4000 passengers, has an indoor surf-simulator, a climbing wall and a skydiving tunnel.
