Street artist Banksy has been identified using a technique that could help fight terrorism, researchers say.
Scientists at Queen Mary University of London have studied the spatial pattern of Banksy's work in Bristol and London to back a previously published theory identifying Robin Gunningham as the graffiti artist.
Geographic profiling was pioneered by former police officer turned academic Professor Kim Rossmo for use in serial crime investigations, but it has recently proved useful in fields such as tracing the source of infectious disease outbreaks or finding the roosts of wild bats.
It takes a large number of locations, such as crime scenes, and looks at groupings of those locations to find "hot spots" that could help trace a criminal's base, such as a home or workplace.
Researchers at Queen Mary University studied locations of Banksy's artwork in London and Bristol and addresses closely associated with Mr Gunningham.
