When Airbnb goes horribly wrong

TOURISTS hoping for a good time at an Airbnb property in France instead found a decomposing body.

The group of friends rented a house in the town of Palaiseau, less than 20km from Paris. When they arrived at the house — a beautiful, big home surrounded by bush — they made the grisly discovery. In the garden behind the property was a body police say belonged to a woman they are yet to identify.

It’s the last thing the group expected or wanted to find, but it’s part of the problem with the massively-popular homesharing venture listing premises in 34,000 cities and 190 countries — you never know what you’re going to get.

Around the world, holiday-makers and homeowners have experienced problems of their own.

‘I’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT’

It’s not a dead body but it’s still a shocking sight. A couple in Calgary, Canada, got the shock of their lives when they returned home from time away to find their property trashed. The video below shows the mess in its entirety.

Huffington Post reported Mark and Star King put their home on Airbnb to make a bit of extra cash but when they rented it to four men for a weekend they returned to find their belongings scattered everywhere. Broken glass was all over the floor, the couch was ripped and cushions discarded. The sink was full of dishes and the toilets were blocked.

The extent of the damage was estimated at £40,500 (roughly $75,000).

“I had my fair share of party days and I’ve never been privy to something like this,” a police officer said. “This is disgusting.”

SQUATTERS REFUSED TO LEAVE APARTMENT

Cory Tschogl will reconsider using Airbnb again after squatters took up residence in his apartment in Palm Springs, California.

Mr Tschogl rented his property to Maksym and Denys Pashinin in May 2014 for 44 days. The brothers paid for only 30 days and under Californian law are then treated as tenants. As such, they refused to leave.

Business Insider reported the homeowners were forced to go through the full eviction process before the pair were made to leave. It took two months to kick them out.

Another California-based homeowner experienced similar problems after renting our her property. Poonam Sandhu, 33, was paid for two weeks at her Santa Cruz property but the tenants decided to stay a lot longer.

She was forced to pay $US1000 to have the squatters evicted.

WOMAN’S BELONGINGS, IDENTITY STOLEN

A woman named “EJ” took some time to herself and went away for a holiday in 2011. Her apartment was rented out to somebody she now knows used a false identity.

When she returned home, her house had been vandalised and trashed. Most alarming was that her personal belongings had been stolen as well as several documents proving her identity.

On her blog, Around the World and Back Again, she wrote about the moment she returned home.

“With heart pounding and stomach churning, I slowly swung the door open as both a pungent odour and the full realisation of what had occurred washed over me: this wasn’t just a random break-in. My home had been burglarised, vandalised and thoroughly trashed by a ‘traveller’ I connected with via the online rental agency, airbnb.com.

“They smashed a hole through a locked closet door, and found the passport, cash, credit card and grandmother’s jewellery I had hidden inside. They took my camera, my iPod, an old laptop, and my external backup drive filled with photos, journals... my entire life.

“They found my birth certificate and social security card, which I believe they photocopied — using the printer/copier I kindly left out for my guests’ use.”

The incident led Airbnb to implement new measures protecting property owners, including a $50,000 property protection guarantee.
