A QUEENSLAND medical student remains in custody in Bolivia after allegedly trying to board a flight while carrying explosives.
A dynamite canister, blasting cap and a bag of pink granulated powder were allegedly found in Julian Giovanni Vicenzo Musumeci’s backpack after he was stopped by narcotic officers at Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz, the Townsville Bulletin reports.
The 24-year-old attempted to board a flight to Sao Paulo, Brazil, with two Australian friends, Justin Maurice Kwong Wei Sun, 25, and Liam Mark Eales, 25.
Mr Sun and Mr Eales were also arrested at the airport but released and remain in the country.
It is understood Mr Musumeci remains in custody awaiting a court trial and could face up to five years in jail if found guilty of possession of explosives.

Bolivian officials say the medical student had been hospitalised for depression, AP has reported. His parents have reportedly flown to Bolivia to be with their son.
The Bulletin reports Mr Musumeci, who attends James Cook University, was in Bolivia for a holiday and to do some humanitarian work.
Friends described the former school prefect and rower as “just your everyday, run-of-the-mill good kid”.
Many suggested he innocently took away the explosives from a Bolivia mining town as a souvenir.
“He’s not the sort of person that would willingly do any harm to anyone,” one former school friend told the newspaper.
Samantha Williams, another school friend, said he was a good student and very popular.

“It was hard to believe when I heard about it. I had seen his photographs during his travels with the guys and then we find out he was arrested,” she said.
“I had heard he was working in a mining village and when you apparently leave, they give you a stick of dynamite. It is all a bit odd.”
A family friend of the Musumeci family told the Bulletin: “I think they were there doing humanitarian work and my guess is they were up in the mining areas before flying out.
“I believe he didn’t even know it was there and probably got it to try and help up there. He has done seven years of medical training and a stupid error could now cost him dearly.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing assistance to Mr Musumeci.
