Liverpool have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan with the news that Juventus are no longer interested in the midfielder.
Juve were thought to be Liverpool's main competitors in the race to sign the 25-year-old, but club director Beppe Marotta ruled out making signings in the January window.
He told Sport Mediaset: "The January transfer window is one for reparation and we do not need to repair anything. In January the moves are not always advantageous for clubs, even if we remain vigilant for any interesting opportunities.
"Gundogan and [Ever] Banega? I can rule out a move for them and the same goes for [Ezequiel] Lavezzi."

Jurgen Klopp worked with Gundogan at Dortmund, and it is believed he would be keen to link up with his compatriot again.

The Colombian has impressed in Serie A this season, and is also attracting interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Another defender Liverpool are being linked with is Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres, who is also a target for Fenerbahce.
Caceres's contract expires in the summer, and Italian publication Tuttosport claims that Klopp will look to sign the defender in January for a cut-price deal.
Elswhere, the Mirror reports that Liverpool are closing in on a deal for FC Basel striker Breel Embolo.
The 18-year-old is one of the hottest properties in European football, and has scored eight goals in 23 matches this season, as well as winning seven Switzerland caps despite his tender years.
Arsenal, Tottenham, Juventus, Barcelona and Wolfsburg are also said to be interested in the teenager.
One striker who has been linked with a move away from Anfield is Christian Benteke.
The Belgian only joined the Reds this summer, but has struggled to adapt to his new club's style of play.
Klopp though rubbished reports he would be leaving the club. "If it’s the same probability of all the other transfer rumours that I’ve heard since I’ve been here, then I’m cool," the German said when asked about the story from The Mirror.
"The things I’ve read so far are nil per cent true. I don’t know. I’ve never heard about this."
Finally, Metro reports that Tottenham will try and sign academy graduate Jordan Rossiter, who is out of contract next summer.
Liverpool are yet to agree a new deal with the midfielder, and Spurs, as well as Manchester City, are monitoring the situation.
