Out Of This World: Space Travel Costs The Earth

Cutting-edge technology on the frontier of space does not come cheap.

:: The cost of the International Space Station, including development, assembly and running costs comes in at a cool €100bn.

:: This figure is shared out among all those taking part in the project, including the US, Russia, Canada, Japan and members of the European Space Agency (ESA) which includes the UK.

:: The European share comes out at around €8bn over the lifetime of the programme, according to the ESA.

:: The agency points out this amounts to just €1 for every European each year - less than the price of a cup of coffee on the high street.
