Jurgen Klopp rules Daniel Sturridge out of Stoke tie

Daniel Sturridge’s inability to complete his training schedule has scuppered his chances of a comeback in the Capital One Cup semi-final.

Jürgen Klopp wants the England striker to complete at least nine days of consecutive, intensive training but he revealed today the 26-year-old has not yet done so and won't be considered for the trip to Stoke on Tuesday.

Although Sturridge announced himself ‘good to go’ when Liverpool played Leicester on Boxing Day, it has emerged he is yet to feature in a full session with the rest of the team.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has much to ponder at the moment

“Daniel had some problems, not serious, but could not make a session and we had to wait a day,” said Klopp.

“It is how a pre-season can be. Some little things happen and we have to handle this. It is not a row of sessions and we say 'Now we are here and go...'

“I will pick him when he is ready, I will not hold him back. Because he didn't have one session with the team it was not the usual plan for this week.

“What Daniel has to do at this moment is hard work to be prepared for the things we make in a football game. He had the last complete pre-season in 2011. In pre-season we load our bodies with strength, energy, all we need for the games and then the problems start.

Daniel Sturridge will not be risked by Liverpool despite being fit to play against West Ham

“It would be easy for me to say 'Come on, let's try, we have problems, we don't score enough goals, let's see what will happen' but we have to wait and be patient.”

Meanwhile, Klopp says Stoke’s transformation under Mark Hughes has been ‘one of the biggest changes in football’.

• Are Liverpool worse under Klopp than Rodgers?

Liverpool head to The Britannia Stadium on Tuesday and Klopp is effusive in his praise for his rival manager.

Stoke have gone from being a direct, long ball side to playing a more purist brand of football.

“Mark Hughes has done a brilliant job there,” said Klopp. “Maybe one of the biggest changes in football is how Stoke played a few years ago and how they play now.”
