Twitter has been unavailable to millions of users around the world due to problems affecting the social network's website and related apps.
Users experienced problems reading and sending tweets from around 8am on Tuesday.
Visitors to the website were greeted by the message: "Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing - we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."
The glitch affected Twitter's own iOS and Android apps and the company's application programming interface (API) - the system applications use to communicate with Twitter.
Twitter, which has around 300 million users worldwide, acknowledged the problem as a "service issue" on its status page just after 9am.
Users were told: "Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution."
