One of the world's most famous astronauts believes that a human colony should be established on Mars.
Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the second man to set foot on the Moon in 1969 and believes humans could touch down on the red planet by 2040.
He says those from the generation born around the year 2000 are likely to be the first making the journey.
Dr Aldrin says an outpost on Mars would require people to live on the planet for long periods to set up a colony that would be fully self-sufficient.
But reaching the planet would be "the easy part", he said.
"We know how to do that. We know how to get people there. It is being able to sustain yourself."
The 86-year-old said "cyclical" transportation would be needed to get people there and keep them supplied with what they need to survive, but added getting to the planet is still "very realistic".
Dr Aldrin was speaking at the Science Museum in London, where he told people that our focus should shift from the Moon to breaking new ground with travel to Mars.
He added: "To take the step, to take the movement, to take the action to begin to occupy... Is there anything bigger that humans could do on Earth than to leave and begin to occupy?"
