Hayne’s preseason schedule set

Jarryd Hayne won’t fear the Texans in week one of the NFL preseason.

AS expected, Jarryd Hayne will be in comfortable surrounds as he begins the fight for his NFL future.

The NFL preseason fixture, announced on Friday morning, sees the 49ers play three of the same four teams they faced last year.

The action begins against the Houston Texans in week one (August 11-15) at Levi’s Stadium. It was against the Texans Hayne first put his name up in lights in America, surging for a 53-yard run with just the second carry of his NFL career in last year’s preseason opener.

But it’s San Francisco’s second trial — a trip to Denver to play the Broncos — which could be the most-anticipated of the entire NFL preseason.

The Broncos have still not entirely given up hope of trading for 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. If the trade goes through, all eyes will be on how Kaepernick fares against the team he led to a Super Bowl in 2013.

Following that the Niners host the Green Bay Packers and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Week three is always the most serious game of the preseason where teams generally select as strong a team as possible.

The build-up to the regular season concludes with a trip south to play San Diego. Hayne had 10 carries for 58 yards and two catches for 17 yards against the Chargers last preseason.

The NFL preseason often pits the same teams against each other every year. The 49ers and Chargers have met every preseason for the past 30 years, including 15 of the past 16 preseason closers.

San Francisco also has plenty of recent history against Denver (fifth consecutive meeting) and Houston (third consecutive meeting).

Of course, Hayne has several months of training before he pits his skills against an opposition team.

Hayne began the first phase of preseason training earlier this week. This is the tentative schedule for the Niners preseason program, as per 49ers.com.

Phase One (April 4-15)

The first two weeks of the program consists of activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two (April 18-May 6)

On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offence versus team defence drills are permitted.

Voluntary Minicamp (April 26-28)

This only applies to teams with a new head coach, like the 49ers under Chip Kelly. The voluntary minicamp must take place prior to the draft, but no earlier than week three of the off-season workout program. This minicamp is subject to the same rules as the mandatory camp below.

OTAs (May 17-19, May 24-26, May 31, June 1-2)

Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organised team practice activity, or “OTAs.” No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills with helmets are permitted. Maximum six hours per day, with a maximum two hours on field for any player.

Mandatory Minicamp (June 7-9)

No mandatory veteran minicamp may exceed three days in length, plus one day for physical examinations. Two-a-day practices shall be permitted at two of the three practice days of the club’s one mandatory minicamp. Players may only be asked to participate in the club’s activities for a maximum of ten hours per day including taping and treatment but excluding mealtime. On-field activities are limited to three and a half hours per player.
